“An Art World on the Wall: Tomb Murals of the Northern Dynasties Excavated in Shanxi” Opens in Shanxi Museum

On December 12, 2019, "An Art World on the Wall: Tomb Murals of the Northern Dynasties Excavated in Shanxi" opened in the exhibition hall on the first floor of the main hall of Shanxi Museum. This exhibition selects the murals of Lou Rui’s tomb, the Jiuyuangang tomb and the Shuiquanliang tomb. It is the first large-scale display of the Northern Dynasties’ murals collected in Shanxi Museum, presenting the superb painting art and the real social appearance of the Northern Dynasties to the public. In order to achieve the best exhibition effect, all the exhibits in this exhibition are shown “nakedly”, that is, not put in showcases, so that the audience can experience the artistic charm of these age-old mural paintings at a close range.

This exhibition is divided into three units, namely "Amazing Splendor", "Colorful Splendor" and "Refreshing Splendor". The murals in Lou Rui’s tomb are representative works of the Chinese painting art in the Southern and Northern Dynasties and have filled in the blank of the art history, that is, the absence of paintings of the Northern Dynasties previously. The murals in the Jiuyuangang tomb are various in content and can be regarded as the social miniatures of the Northern Dynasties. There are the hunting-themed picture that is the largest of its kind among tomb murals of the same period and the soul-ascending-themed picture that is the richest of that period in content. With the help of advanced restorative protection technology, the Shuiquanliang tomb of the Northern Qi Dynasty in Shuozhou City is moved into the exhibition hall to represent a complete, visualized and accessible underground world.

The exhibition period is from December 12, 2019 to March 12, 2020. Except for the exhibition area of the murals in the Shuiquanliang tomb that entails reservation, the other exhibition areas can be admitted to simply by producing one’s identity card, free of charge and free of appointment. The exhibition area of the murals in the Shuiquanliang tomb of the Northern Qi Dynasty in Shuozhou can be visited by making reservation. One can follow the WeChat account of Shanxi Museum and make an appointment online in accordance with instruction.
